Abstract:
The researcher has been undertaking a study on challenges affecting the management of legal records at Githunguri law courts, Kiambu county. The main purpose of undertaking this study is to ensure that the state in which records are managed is improved for the benefit of enhancing service delivery and hence achieve transparency, accountability and good governance.
The main aim of exploring the challenges of management of legal records is to ensure that Githunguri court is responsive to the needs of those it serves and can deliver services more efficiently and effectively. The records management functions, structure and operations should be reshaped and the staff must enhance their productivity to effectively facilitate service delivery through faster decision making processes.
The strategy outlines key actions that Githunguri court should take to improve records management. This includes implementing guidelines on management of records such as Public Archives and Documentation service Act cap. 19, Records Disposal Act, cap.14 and Government Financial Regulations cap.23, (2003).
A fundamental concept that leads to improvement of records management includes computerization of records, introduction of (ISO) international standards for organization in records management among others. It is clear that a well functioning records management unity requires a high degree of professionalism, better working tools and increased responsibility for the records management officers.
